Interesting results- all great songs. I’ve seen magazines have Top 100 Dylan songs and there are still great songs that do not make it!
Yes, his music catalogue is so extensive and wonderful, that to subject his music to any kind of ‘favourite list’ feels like a sin. Haha.
I think there are songs in his catalog that have been somewhat overlooked that they will be discovering as ‘great songs’ decades from now..
I couldn’t agree more. Indeed, many of his truly great songs get overlooked.
It’s hard picking a favorite song…but if I had to pick one song it would probably be It’s Alright Ma…
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to it. It’s just as much of a statement as a song.
Great choice bad. The lyrics are outstanding.
If I had a gun pointed to my head to choose, I would go with ‘Visions of Johanna’ but the live 66 version on the Royal Albert bootleg release. Or Desolation Row the original studio release. I don’t think I’ve heard harmonica playing as good as that. I also really like Desolation Row from the MTV unplugged show.
I cannot argue with those…That MTV unplugged show was wonderful. Love anything from the 66 tour.
Just curious, how do you like the Don’t Look Back film and the bootleg Eat The Document film?
Look, it’s been a while since I have seen those two films. I probably prefer Scorsese’s ‘No Direction Home’ purely from an entertainment perspective. But as historical records the Pennebaker films are essential Dylan viewing of course. I always felt sorry for Joan on that tour when watching Don’t Look Back. Dylan didn’t seem to be the most humble guy going. But I suppose it’s because of his relentless self-drive and adoration that he was able to reach the stratosphere in terms of creating hugely influential music. He bent music at will like a magician bends a spoon hehe.
What did you think of these docos?
No Direction Home I will admit is great.
I just wish we could get Eat The Document in a cleaned up version.
Oh I always feel bad while watching the way he treated her. She really helped his career but he really…he out grew her but it’s almost like he invited her to brush her aside publically.
Don’t Look Back is a masterpiece to me. It fully captures him at that time. He toys with Donavan but ends up treating him well.
Eat The Document is not a masterpiece but a time capsule… It’s not as coshesive as Don’t Look Back. I just love excitement of the concerts where they didn’t know what to expect.

I think I watched clips of eat the document in You Tube. I may have score a bootleg of it years ago, but I can’t remember.
Yes poor Joan. I think she said it was about the worst thing to ever happen to her.
The scenes with Donovan are probably my favourite ones from the documentary. I like a lot of Donovan’s music including the song he sings in DLB and especially ‘Catch The Wind’.
Catch the Wind is a good song. I do like some of his later things like Season of the Witch…different style for sure.
