I don’t often present political material, except in cases like the aftermath of the October 7 attacks on Israel. At that time, I shared a video showing five Israeli women under Hamas gun threat, with visible injuries from their attackers. It was confronting material. What struck me also was how difficult it was to find this footage through mainstream search results at the time.
Oh, and low and behold, now it seems you can under ‘Graphic video shows horrific kidnapping of 5 female Israeli hostages‘.
Then I presented a video from a Professional Conference on Sexual Violence addressing what occurred on October 7th. I should warn that it is highly distressing to watch and listen to, but I felt it needed to be shared so people were aware of what happened and what we are faced with.
This interview with Ted Cruz presents a robust perspective. He outlines what he sees as the threat posed by ideological regimes, including the government of Iran and Cuba where he came from, which he characterises as both authoritarian and religiously extreme (the former).
It echoes a point I touched on in my review of the Iranian movie My Favourite Cake, where I noted how restrictive policies can affect even the most personal aspects of daily life in Iran – such as a woman simply wishing to host a man in her own home.
The thing is, many people in the Western world – especially Democrats and those on the more liberal end of the spectrum elsewhere – have little idea how severe the situation is. Instead, they tend to see an imperial U.S. government trying to topple a fanatical religious regime, rather than recognising what they believe the evidence points to: one of the most oppressive systems imaginable, which, if it had the capability, would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons against cities like the United States or London.
At the same time, much of the Western press gives the impression that it is siding with Iran in this conflict. Despite the vast resources the United States has committed over decades to support and defend its allies – including thousands upon thousands of troops stationed abroad – there is a growing sense that some of these nations are now distancing themselves. It beggars belief.
