Wind Behind The Rain – Jason Isbell

This chord sequence, which repeats throughout Wind Behind the Rain, seems so familiar and has probably been done to death, but that’s alright since it’s just such a sweet and tender tune. Sometimes simple chords and simple words, juxtaposed in the right cadence, can create such vivid imagery. It always plucks at my heartstrings whenever I hear it.

The song was written for his little brother and his brother’s wife as a wedding song.

Isbell explained:

“My little brother was getting married, and his fiancée asked me if I would write a song for their first dance for their wedding.”

Isbell reportedly said he was more nervous singing it at his brother’s wedding than performing somewhere like Red Rocks because of how much the occasion meant to them. Isbell also clarified that, unlike much of the album, the song’s story “has nothing to do with me” autobiographically.

His tenth and latest studio album, Foxes in the Snow (2025), was widely associated with the aftermath of his divorce from Amanda Shires, so it would be easy to assume the closing love song was about Isbell’s own new relationship.

It was his first solo acoustic album and the first since his debut, Sirens of the Ditch (2007), not to feature any members of his backing band, The 400 Unit.

Wind Behind the Rain is an outpouring of a man’s undying love for his girl, but it’s done in such an intimate and relatively humble fashion that it seems even more authentic and romantic than your rote, by-the-numbers love ballad. They’re going the long haul too….

The combination of the country-tinged sound, Isbell’s Alabama Southern accent and cowboy-esque themes works a charm here:
