Australia was leading 3-0 against Ecuador in the first half. I thought I was dreaming. Their passing and control was world class. But early into the second half it became apparent that the first half was just a cruel dream wrapped inside a nightmare perhaps in preparation for the Group of Death in Brazil.
Aussie goalie Mitchell Langerak got a red card for karate kicking an Ecuador player. It was quite a kick. Thought I was watching an Under 12 taekwondo championship.
My Colombiana novia warned me after Ecuador’s first goal, ‘Latin football teams know where to pound the weakness area. Ecuador will be relentless’. She was right of course.
Australia went onto to lose 4 – 3 final whistle. Not all was hell, Tim Cahill became Australia’s all-time top goalscorer and I won a silly 20 dollar bet on Australia losing. I like betting against who I want to win. It’s as though I win whatever the outcome.
Aussie coach Postecoglou clearly has some work to do before Brazil. The 1st half should be played on continuous loop in the training room.
