In My Room (1963) – Beach Boys

This song was recorded in the summer of 1963 and has some of the most beautiful harmonies in Rock History. Simply stellar singing, songwriting, arrangement and depth. It has a breezy feel this song but alas it’s Brian Wilson writing about being in his room. I don’t believe I was familiar with this song in my youth but chanced upon it more recently. It was released on their album Surfer Girl and as the B-side of the “Be True to Your School” single and peaked at number 23 in the U.S.

There’s a world where I can go
And tell my secrets to
In my room
In my room

In this world I lock out
All my worries and my fears
In my room
In my room

Do my dreaming and my scheming
Lie awake and pray
Do my crying and my sighing
Laugh at yesterday

According to cowriter Gary Usher, Brian was always saying that his room was his whole world. “I had a room, and I thought of it as my kingdom. And I wrote that song.” I can attest I know that room too Brian.
Brian Wilson wrote in 1990 about In My Room:
There is a story behind this song. When Dennis, Carl and I lived in Hawthorne as kids, we all slept in the same room… I proceeded to teach them both how to sing the harmony parts to ‘Ivory Tower’. It took them a little while, but they finally learned it. We then sang this song night after night. It brought peace to us. When we recorded “In My Room”, there was just Dennis, Carl and me on the first verse … and we sounded just like we did in our bedroom all those nights. This story has more meaning than ever since Dennis’ death.

The album Surfer Girl reached number 7 in the US during a chart stay of 56 weeks. This was the first album by the group for which Brian Wilson was given sole production credit.

Needless to say but I love the harmonies on this and most of their other song.

    • I couldn’t agree more. Big fan of this song.

I wish your Dodgers the best today. It’s the best of 5 isn’t it?

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

yep!…if they don’t win today it’s done…they haven’t been hitting well since late in the season so we will see!

      • Terrible timing. I hope they somehow recover!

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

Yea me also! They are good enough to do it…now we will see if they do

      • They deserve it based on their record! It would be sad if they bowed out now.

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

It will be damn tough…this long long season and it comes to this.

      • Brutal buddy. Sorry for your loss. So many upsets this finals series it seems so far.

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

I’m crushed dude….I went to church this morning…and I needed it after the things I said last night lol.

      • I don’t blame you for being crushed. It took me a couple of days to get over the Richmond finals loss. Who do you think will win from here or better even who would you like to see win?

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

I want anyone NOT named the Astros to win. It’s been a lot of upsets in this one…more than I’ve ever seen!
The Braves were a huge upset…I would love to see the Phillies win…it’s been a long time for them.

      • Yeh, I now remember your disdain for the Astros. I’ll go for Phillies from here too.

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

The Phillies and Indians (or the new NON offensive name Guardians) are the two underdogs.

      • Incredible, they had to change their name. Scary stuff. I would like to see Indians get over Yankees.

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

Can you beleive that? What in the hell is offensive about Indians???? I would also.

      • It’s amazing how the radical-left have infiltrated the major sports amongst other companies, Hollywood, press and education.
You know what they should have done? The Indians should have just allowed all the members to vote on whether they change the name to the Guardians. That’s democracy.

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

Yes…get this….they took a poll of real Indians about the Washington Redskins…did that name offend them? Less than 10 percent said yes….they changed it anyway. Early twenty year old women are the ones that took up their “cause.”
        Political Corectness is a cancer

      • Less than 10 percent said yes? That’s authoritarian / fascism, my friend. It’s a cancer / virus indeed. The mass formation effect caused by the hypnotised fanatics has become more evident since the Pandemic and WEF’s Great Reset initiative. The corporative execs and Government officials are corrupt and have no courage.

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

These corporations are starting to feel it now. People are FINALLY fighting back. Some company…I think it was Coke… yea here is an article…yes they are corrupt.
        https://blog.ongig.com/diversity-and-inclusion/how-to-be-less-white-coca-cola-diversity/

      • I remember when Gillete came out with their toxic masculinity ad, I decided I would never buy their shavers or any product from their parent company ever again.
Paradoxically, this antiracism diversity training like Coca Cola’s is in fact racist. They all fell over head over heels for Robin DeAngelos book.

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

What a joke of a book…someone I knew had it and I read some…her book to me IS racist.

      • Someone tried to get me to read it when they followed my blog and I said I wouldn’t. Let’s just say they are no longer followers.
I have read enough commentary from moderate intellectuals on her book to know I didn’t have to read it. She has made a living from making white people seem they are inherently racist. It’s crazy stuff.

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

LOL… I read enough to know…I would not contribute to her sales…
Anyone can be racists including blacks, whites, Asians, and anyone else…I hate that stuff.
I do see people starting to see common sense now…at least some.

      • You are right. The slave trade still occurs and occurred in nearly every culture by every race. I see the common person waking up to the moral exhibisonist crusade, but not the politicians, media and corporate execs, and school educators. People who stand up to it are forced out. It seems to be getting worse to me and it appears there is not much the Lay person can do about it. But perhaps I’m being too pessimist. Although people in Europe are voting to offset it such as in Italy with ‘God, love and family first line. But that is a predominently Catholic country. But it didn’t work in Colombia as they just voted in a Socialist. But socialism has had its stranglehold in these parts for decades now.

      • Badfinger (Max) says:

Each time a companies PC ways leak out to the public now….they receive a huge backlash now. Coke and The Salvation Army were crushed here when people find out. That tells me the obvious…only a minority thinks that way and they try to push it on everyone else.
Yea I’ve read that about Columbia as far as socialism.
