Although it (Wicked Game) is often interpreted as a ballad about unrequited love, Chris Isaak has said that the song was inspired by a late-night telephone call from a woman offering to come over, and is about “what happens when you have a strong attraction to people that aren’t necessarily good for you“. It was written shortly after the call.

David Lynch featured it in his 1990 film Wild at Heart. Lee Chesnut, a music director at an Atlanta radio station who loved David Lynch films, began playing it after seeing the movie. The song quickly became a major hit, reaching No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in March 1991.
