After The Fact is the title track from Syd Taylor’s debut 2025 album, which was written and produced entirely by Taylor in her Los Angeles apartment. I like this song whenever it comes on my player. It has a late-’50s vintage sound with vocal touches reminiscent of an Everly Brothers song, but there’s also a modern indie rock edge.
Syd’s voice is so unique! It’s sultry but has a masculine resonance to it as well, but sometimes tiptoes into a girlish Lana del Rey-esque airy voice. It’s pretty groovy and I like the drum rhythm – a bit reminiscent of Be My Baby by The Ronettes – a kick on beat one followed by two quick snare hits.
I checked out Syd’s other tracks Heaven and Honeycomb and also liked those a lot. I hear a blend of Kate Moss, Lana del Rey and Chris Isaak in those tracks too. It’s all good stuff and highly original, but you can still hear echoes of other music and artists in it. As if you can hear a pattern emerging.
Syd Taylor is a Detroit-born singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer who began writing songs at just six years old. She later formed the sister duo Stereo Jane before embarking on her solo career in Los Angeles, releasing her debut album After the Fact.
Influenced by artists such as The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Nina Simone, Syd brings a blend of indie rock, pop and classic songwriting to her music. She writes, plays and produces her own material, giving her solo work a distinctly personal feel.
[Verse 1]
I’m not some pretty little drama queen
Not gonna stare at my phone
And think of ways to keep you close
I know exactly what I want and need
And if you can’t uphold
I’ll be better on my own
[Pre-Chorus]
Tell me what’s the language that you speak
Do you roll your tongue the same as me
I don’t wanna show you how
I’m impatient and I want it now
Tell me, can you give me what I want
Bet you can if you just wave your wand
I’ll tell you what I’m all about
If you can’t listen, then it’s strike, you’re out
[Chorus]
If you’re gonna love me, better love me right
And if you’re gonna hold me, better hold me tight
And if you’re gonna lose me, you can do it tonight
So I can kick your ass to the back of the line
And if you’re gonna fuck me, better make it last
‘Cause once I’m gone, you’re never gonna get me back
So if you’re gonna lose me, don’t get too attached
And don’t you realize what you had after the fact
[Verse 2]
I’m not somebody who can take it slow
‘Cause when I like what I see
There’s no way of stopping me
And if you want me, I’ll know
‘Cause I can feel it in my bones
Been here too many times before
I got good at knowing my worth
[Pre-Chorus]
Tell me what’s the language that you speak
Do you roll your tongue the same as me
I don’t wanna show you how
I’m impatient and I want it now
Tell me, can you give me what I want
Bet you can if you just wave your wand
I’ll tell you what I’m all about
If you can’t listen, then it’s strike, you’re out
[Chorus]
