What’s Your Greatest Comedic Moment? Larry and the Battered Women

Larry David goes to see some battered women (women who have suffered from domestic abuse)…You might recall the fabulous actress Ma’am’ here as Eddie’s wife Catherine in the 1983 Vacation movie – Miriam Flynn. She made this scene work as much as Larry.

This post may not be to everyone’s liking, but such is comedy. I received a response to a comment on You tube which I had written eon’s ago about this video and I noticed it received 454 likes! That’s nearly boy-band territory and I was gobsmacked. My very likeable comment was as follows:

I think this is my favourite scene from the show. The support cast are just brilliant and the awkwardness and lack of sincerity conveyed by everyone in their suppressed anger states is utterly engrossing.’

Even before many decided my comment was so likeable I felt this scene… as far as comedy served was the best I’d ever seen. So in celebration of my intuition and the many likes I was greeted (and big-head), I commit this legendary video to my blog…

What ingenious comedic moment rings true for you?

You’re 454 times famous, but it’s a great comment and a marvellous scene. My favourite line: “The washing machine’s fucked.” It’s all very funny and I shall be seeking more on Youtube. A comedic moment for me in life was as a teenager and we were watching a comedian on TV – I can’t remember who – and the jokes were rather unseemly and suddenly my mother couldn’t control herself anymore and shrieked with laughter. Thank goodness, because we all wanted to laugh as well! It was very funny because Mum was rather proper.

    • Many of the scenes from ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ on you tube are difficult to appreciate when taken out of context since they are part of a bigger story or a meshing of story arcs.

I’m delighted you like this scene because I just find it so awkwardly brilliant. I like your recalling that lovely trip down memory lane and your mother bursting our laughing. Thanks for sharing something so personal and beautifully poignant.

I missed this one and just found it while searching for your latest blog–“Excess deaths during the Pandemic…” and am glad I did. I really needed that laugh. L….O….L…….. !

But yeah, is anyone else having troubling getting into “Excess deaths…” ? When I click on any part of it, it just says “Nothing found” in red and except for the woman’s picture at the top with the sunglasses on, it’s more or less blank.

    Hope you’re doing well……

Oh, gotcha. That’s good. I’m always glad when it’s not due to my computer screwing up somehow.

We’re okay here. The death of this (latest) man here was a horrible exclamation point at the end of our long exchange on just this topic, but it seems like people have reached a point of no return. They’re seeing the brick wall that is erected up against a particular portion of the populace from the day. they. are. born. My heart still hurts, though.

I’d MUCH rather live in the Curb Your Enthusiasm world with Larry who’s just an asshole in general against everybody–equal opportunity assholism, you know? It’s okay if you don’t get along with ANYBODY. At least it’s not targeted at one type! Aaaaaaahhhhh!

Have they lifted restrictions for the virus in your town yet?

    • My views about the protests and the brutal death of George Floyd align closely with those espoused in Glenn Loury and John McWhorter’s ‘Cops and Race’ which I sent you in a previous message on the other post.
I also thought Heather Heying’s 14 true points clip was refreshing and illuminating among all the hysterics in the media and on the streets in the US at this time.

Colombia like many other Latin Countries are doing it tough with the virus. Despite loosening the restrictions a little for businesses, Bogota is about to be put on ‘Orange’ alert because soon it will meet 50% ICU capacity.
Despite going in hard and early against the virus, it’s now rearing it’s ugly head, perhaps not to the same extent as Italy, NY and Spain, but its concerning. The hardships the quarantine has placed on individuals and families which comprised the informal labour market is what most concerns me.

Thanks, Matt. Watched the whole thing and the one below.

If you want to understand where the defensiveness of both clips (including the one below) are coming from, if you have time, you can take a look at:

But otherwise, I unfortunately think we’re at an impasse concerning the race issue. And frankly, for someone to comment “Black Lives Matter” isn’t all it’s made to be in the middle of the existential and also real physical crisis that’s happening in the US right now simply reflects back more of everything Dr. Angelo is talking about in her video. I have no idea what this podcaster is talking about re: Black Lives, but no organization is perfect or without issues, and to make a statement like that in the middle of this rising consciousness after we all watched a man slowly die before us is beyond self-righteous and insensitive.

      • In yesterday’s session and Q&A they expanded more on their critical views of ‘Black Lives Matter’ citing reasons and evidence. I watched the introduction of the video you sent, but noting the introductory speaker apologised for her inherent racism and that Michael Dyson forwarded the book, I won’t need to see anymore of that one. Yes, we are at an impasse on this matter.

It’s too bad there remains a vacuum of good leadership on this (Martin Luther-esque), at least from a centrist / moderate perspective.

      • I didn’t think I would have to resort to this, but this Ben Shapiro video today encapsulates everything I have been saying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53LW3gNl6FE
It’s truthful and logical. As I posted about tonight, I can’t believe as a left wing progressive I’ve had to go to conservative news sources for something that utters what’s actually happening.

    • Another good video about where we find ourselves is here:

PS: On a different but equally important issue: I’m sorry to hear about the virus increasing or making a comeback where you are. Please be careful and continue to stay safe, amigo.
