Low Light (2022) – Art Block

The bittersweet “Low Light” is both captivating and melancholy. Art Block’s vocals are downright heartbreaking here, perfectly conveying the intense pain and heartache of a relationship or friendship that’s falling apart, but not wanting to come to terms with it just yet: “A friendship ooh has crumbled. Ooh we’ve stumbled, as we break into dust. A fear I don’t wanna see. A light I don’t want feel. A low light I don’t wanna see. A change I don’t wanna make tonight.”

I learnt about Art Block and their White Horses EP at Jeff’s blog Eclectic Music Lover. I really enjoyed today’s featured track Low Light which Jeff described above. He has already reviewed Art Block at least three times, so I point you to his excellent blog dedicated to mostly current music. He’s definitely in the know and has personal connections with many of the artists presented there.

Art Block is an alternative folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in East London, England. A prolific artist, he’s been making beautiful music for a number of years, and has released an impressive number of singles, EPs and remixes since early 2015, beginning with his debut L.A.-inspired single “Los Feliz”.

  1. Wow, Matt, thanks so much for sharing my post about this talented artist, and also your very generous words about me and my blog. I’m truly honored.

    • Your description of the song far outweighs anything I could have tried to articulate so I let the original source do the talking in this case. I’ll be listening to them again shortly, so I am grateful for your post and efforts to communicate so eloquently and comprehensively about new music which otherwise I would not have had the privilege to hear. Cheers.

      • That means a lot to me, as I sometimes feel insecure about my writing. BTW, I shared your post on Twitter, also tagging your account, which appears to be inactive. Twitter’s a minefield of crap, and while engagement of my tweets and referrals to my blog posts have sharply declined since Mr. Musk took over, I still use it to try and promote my blog and support music artists I follow.

      • You shouldn’t feel insecure at all; you have a great command of the English language, at least based on my estimation.
Oh man, I had a Twitter account many, many moons ago when I used to do MLB betting (of all things). I’m not a Twitter fan although personally, I’m hunky – dory that Musk took it over. I’m sad to read your referrals have dropped off. I’ll never use FB, Twitter or Instagram. I don’t care how many ‘likes’ I get on WordPress. It’s funny how a lot of the songs I post about which I like the most of all receive the smallest amount of likes or feedback.
The articles on my site receives on average 80 views a day (worldwide), and I suppose that seems a meagre amount, but when I think about it more, that’s up to 80 articles people are reading from all around the world mostly presented by me. I take a lot of heart in knowing so many are reading my words and listening to music that inspires me. That helps me keep going. But it’s my passion and I don’t want to do anything else. I imagine you feel something akin to that in what you do.

      • I appreciate that Matt. As for Twitter, I have great disdain for Elon Musk. And finally, I hate to admit that I do care about how many views and ‘likes’ my blog posts receive, especially for the album reviews which I work so hard on and spend a lot of time writing. That said, it does sometimes cause frustration and disappointment for me, which is stupid.

      • Life’s funny like that. I’m not going to even ask you about Musk. I can see we are in different camps on him. And that’s cool.
I posted a song I like a lot yesterday from Tom Waits which has just received 4 likes ‘ouch’ and the song article today of Art Block by you up to now has 7 likes so far. Now I’m not insinuating the song ‘Low Light’ by Art Block isn’t as good since the eyes are in the beholder (ears in this case), but ‘Lowdown’ by Waits I consider an excellent blues piece, and the words are masterful.
Obviously, others don’t see it that way and sh/t happens. haha This always happens when I post Perri’s music.
I know what you mean about the frustration. I think it’s about how you feel when writing it and what it means to you. It’s like learning a second language..it’s either an obsession or not. If it’s not – ‘then good luck with that’.

      • As you’ve probably guessed, I’m a progressive liberal, while I’m guessing from some of your posts that you’re more conservative-leaning.

There’s often no rhyme or reason as to which posts receive a lot of engagement, and which don’t.

      • I guessed that, and I was one! I grew up on Bob Dylan music for God’s sake since I was 13. I have written lots about this political spectrum in my blog. I now consider that I’m a liberal centrist, but this is more a reflection of where I believe the modern-left has gone in the last decade.

Hey, Jeff if you are interested, there is a post I wrote about the ‘political compass test’ which still receives many views. My results are on there. You should take the test which doesn’t take long, but I would advise against reading my article until you have taken it.
Below is the link. I’d be fascinated to see where you sit on it:

Max at Powerpop and I took it and the results were so interesting.

      • I took the test and posted my result on that blog post.

      • Hey Jeff, Sharon at ‘writer’s tidbits’ referred me to Benjamin Grossman’s WordPress blog. And after hearing ‘Husband and Wife’ I immediately thought this is right up your alley. It’s an amazing track. I’m listening to it for the third time. Do you know this guy?

      • No, I don’t, but I found my way to his blog and listened to the song. It’s a sweet song.

      • Sweet? I think it’s awesome, and thanks for taking the time to hear it.

  2. Like this a lot! He sounds like a young man that I follow on WordPress, Benjamin Grossman a very similar vocal style.

  3. Afternoon Matt, yes I knew you would like Benjamin if you like Art Block! I think they sound so similar it’s uncanny! All Benjamin’s recordings are good, couldn’t pick between them. He also writes, a smart young man. Oh, remember I told you my Dad was a Capricorn, let’s just say he was known to use the swear word F*…so Matt don’t worry!!! Ha! Ha! Ha! And yes, I slept well, you must be my lucky charm! Will forward anything else for your consideration if I think you might like it.

  4. Hi Matt, that makes me happy! So happy you connected with Benjamin, yes ‘Husband and Wife’ is a terrific song, knew you would like it. And he writes poems etc, a great guy! Matt, I came across this Theordora Gross poem she wrote in 2015 it’s called ‘Autumn’s Song,’ it’s even got a short film made from it. I think it’s amazing! Check out the link!

  5. Hope that link came out, it looks OK. If not, just google it. Enjoy!

  6. Sharon, I’ll took a look at it when I wake up proper. Hehe. Thanks so much for sending me it.
