23/10 – 29/10/23 Stay Young, Kicking and Screaming & Ol’ Halloween!

Welcome to Monday’s News on the March – The week that was in my digital world.

Stay Young Forever: Peter Attia
Video interview by Dr Rangan Chatterjee

Ex surgeon and ex marathon swimmer Dr Peter Attia is a physician focused on the applied science of longevity. His knowledge about biochemistry, nutrition and exercise is second to none. Also, his first interview on Joe Rogan´s podcast is stellar viewing if you want to get immersed into his incredible life and intellect.

Imagine yourself in the last decade of your life. What would you like to be able to do? I’m talking about the simple stuff, such as walking up a flight of stairs without losing your breath or picking up your grandchild. How about being able to stand up unaided, after sitting comfortably on the floor? Or simply being able to get yourself on and off the toilet with ease?

It’s so easy to assume these everyday movements will still come easily when we’re old. But my guest on this week’s episode of my Feel Better Live More podcast wants us to get real to the fact they probably won’t – unless we take action now.

Reely Bernie Faves: Kicking and Screaming (1995)
Blog article by Reely Bernie

Kicking and Screaming (1995) is a brainy indie flick from the 90s that places wit above rom-com and Gen X-subject chatter before semblance of plot. Calling it a “talky” François Truffaut-influenced study of yuppy slackerdom is fair, but dismissing the likability of each character isn’t humane.

Grover, Max, Otis, and Skippy are postgraduates who’d rather work at a video store, fill out crosswords, or converse with the philosophizing bartender than find their compass. Their stagnation is a small slice of life that may be relatable to some or comical relief to others. Either way, the results are charming, sobering, and deadpan hilarious.

Is that a pajama top?

No… yes.

Between all the tweed sports jacket solipsism and lazy but insightful procrastination is my favorite screenplay.

Are you wearing mascara?

No… yes.

The sharp, poignant lines come from a rookie filmmaker in twenty-five-year-old Noah Baumbach, who would later make his mainstream mark with Greenberg (2010), Marriage Story (2019), and Barbie (2023). Read the entire article here.

Ol’ Halloween!
Sharon’s prose at Sharon’s Writers Tidbits

Night has fallen swift and silent
snatching the daytime like a thief.
Tiny stars are diamonds,
dotted in the inky sky above, how they glisten!
A chilly mist moves slowly across the darkness.
Out of the mist the tap, tap of footfall resounds
– children are trick or treating
their tread ever so light and playful
as they bundle up garden paths,
a gaggle of woolly hats and scarves.
Doorbells jingle and jangle and echo in the cold, cold night.
Somewhere in the distance a jack-o-lantern appears
eyes ablaze, jeering spookily…
And in the dead of night
whilst all the small children are asleep
shadows slope across the empty streets
roaming this way and that way
calling out and sneering.
A black cat appears from nowhere
and then slinks into the netherworld.
And at sunrise all the lost, lonely souls disappear

– until the next halloween ….

I’ll watch Attia’s interview when I can…I’m trying to get 3 miles a day every day…we will see if that is enough lol.

    • Hi Max. I wish I was half as dedicated, smart and articlulate as Peter Attia. ‘3 miles a day’ is a good thing and I wish you well with it.
I started getting into swimming which I never enjoyed as a youngster. I had to do it as I suffered a calf strain after jogging which wouldn’t get better. Attia mentioned that he doesn’t run like he used to because of his preoccupation with joint issues getting older. If I remember rightly, he sticks to treadmill-incline walks, swimming, cycling and building muscle strength. That sounds like a good routine.

  3. Oh Matt, I just clicked on to thank you once again for including me in this week’s ‘March on the News’, I glance down and see I am being referred to by one of your loyal followers!! That’s so so lovely! And cheers very much for the link to ‘Master Time’. I owe you big time!!!

    • Sharon, I feel grateful to even know you. When you write I normally tell family here – ‘Oh Sharon said this or that.’
‘Master Time’ is right up there. Oh by the way, I think I got a Theodora Goss present..just an inkling. I’ll have to wait to see what the big man has in store.

      • Ahh Matt, that’s so kind of you to say. I feel like a celebrity!!! I hope your hunch about the Theordora Goss book/present is correct! Happy! Happy!

      • Sharon, you are my one and only celebrity poet in London.

You have an excellent Wednesday Sharon.

      • Ahh Matt, that’s so lovely of you to say! You’re my first and only fan! And I extend my gratitude to you. Greetings from London. Sharon

      • Every time I post it seems (early morning here in CO) I get a post from you. Do you get a notification of my posts? Excuse me for being a sticky-nose.
How is London this morning? We are in the wet season and the rain has been relentless and I’m without a umbrella until the weekend. Just the other night the rain was so ferocious and enduring that I thought an Ark might be required. My Golly. Cheers Sharon.

      • Hi Matt, I follow you so when I click my reader icon I get your most recent post. But also the posts of other people I follow or related subjects. Hope that helps! Yeah, London is pretty dreary at the moment too. I’m kind of looking forward to Christmas! Can’t think why.

      • Oh I see, so it was just by fortune that you happened to message me when I posted.
Why can’t you think of why you’d be looking forward to XMAS? Do you have family you will be spending it with?
My biggest stress leading up to XMAS is buying the kids respective pressies ahead of the festival pandemonium here.

      • Hi Matt, you tend to blog very early and it tends to be the same time I check my blog (given the time differences, quite a coincidence)! Yes, Christmas is a bit hit or miss with me. I think it’s for children!!

      • I understand your perspective and trepidation re. XMAS. I had always been a bit off a Grinch, but my kids convinced me to buy a little XMAS tree and the respective ornaments. I’m already looking forward to put it up. It wasn’t until experiencing the shenanigans of the Pandemic that I learnt to respect and exude more XMAS spirit. I was also given a makeshift manger (and the rest) to set up in my living room. Exhibiting a ‘nativity scene’ is just about obligatory here at XMAS time lol

      • Hi Matt, I would so love to see your makeshift manger/nativity set!!! I’m kind of laughing real hard!!! So cute!!!

      • That’s funny Sharon. As I was replying to you about the nativity scene, I thought I must write a post about it all on the day I set it up and take photos etc (I think according to Catholic rituals people set up their decorations and ornaments the first day of the ‘advent’ – 4 weeks before XMAS).
Mind you my display is nothing to write home about, but it’s at least sweet hehe.
Do you display any XMAS ornaments in your home come XMAS?

      • Well Matt, as you are the father of young children you may as well get into the spirit of things!! I’ve got a Xmas tree/light which I switch on during the festive season. It’s quite nice. Other than that, I don’t get too fussy as it’s over very quickly, certainly here in the UK. I can image Colombia takes Xmas more seriously. Funny, I met a guy recently, a cab driver who was from Eritrea, he told me that Christmas was big out there. They have three days of eating, drinking and being very merry!! I Who knew! x

      • Happy Tuesday Sharon. I see what you mean about the XMAS spirit entangled with little ones. I am fortunate indeed. I remember how XMAS was in Australia and it became for me just another event amongst the others. It’s a very communal occasion.
Yes, you are right, here the XMAS decorations, trees and music come out early. In the nearest Central Commercial the huge XMAS tree is already out and shining bright at night.
I had to look up Eritrea, but I’m glad I did. His description sounds similar to a family XMAS in Australia.
        Speaking of ‘Spirit’:

      • Yes Matt, I have to say Eritrea at Christmastime sounds fun and festive! I enjoyed the Christina Perri song, she has an amazing catalogue. Oh Matt I must tell you this. I saw ‘The Remains of the Day’ on Netflix (finally). Fantastic movie, but why the hell didn’t Anthony Hopkins ask for Emma Thompson’s hand in marriage, he obviously had strong feelings for her! And the book scene, I’ll remember forever!!! Great movie. I’m going to send you a song, which I think you may like, I’ve been meaning to send it to you forever! Hope you’re having a good day. Sharon

      • I’m so stoked you saw Remains of the Day!!!! Regarding why he didn’t ask for her hand; I imagine it’s because she went highfalutin with the other butler and they ended up having kids. I can’t imagine Mr Stevens is one to tread on that sacred ground and even in post divorce since she had family to tend to.
I think the most romantic scene I’ve ever seen in all of cinema is when they part ways at the wharf. That brings tears to my eyes every time which I’m sure you remember (see below) I’m thrilled you saw it and I found it gets better upon each viewing. In my top 5 movies ever without a doubt.

I can’t wait for your song. It’s 643pm here. You rest up and chat again soon. Big hugs.

  4. Hi Matt, this was the song I tried to upload a couple of times for you last night! Not sure why my uploads to you do not always work. I love her voice!!
Oh, you might like’ The Age of Innocence’ with Michelle Pheiffer and Daniel Day Lewis
or Howard’s End with Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins again! Great team. Enjoy!

    • Sharon, good morning to you. I’m afraid, none of the video links have come through. Strange. Can you just tell me the name of the song and artist? I have to try and watch The Age of Innocence and Howard’s End. They have often brought up as recommendations to me. I wish you a magnificent day.
